about

'Lucy Wan' is an incest ballad that A.L. Lloyd and Ralph Vaughan Williams included in 'The Penguin Book Of English Folk Song' (1954), but the tune there isn’t the very unusual, stark one in Lydian mode that A.L. Lloyd himself sang but apparently never recorded. Only the third line shows similarity. He admitted to Martin Carthy, who learned it from him, that he had pushed it in a more Lydian direction, but we don’t seem to know what his starting tune really was; perhaps he made it up. It was Kate Betney’s singing of the Lloyd version in Edinburgh that stuck in my mind and has stayed there for 50 years. I played it on koncovka, whose natural scale suits the Lydian mode well, on 2008’s 'Ochre', and now return to its first and second verses as a starting and ending point for this zither piece.
