about

An intro, and then two alternating, runo-song melodies, whose titles translate as ‘Marjukkainen my mother’ and ‘Let the child sleep, O Lord’. They were collected, before the Soviet deportation of Ingrian Finns, by Finnish ethnomusicologist and composer Armas Launis (1884-1959) from singers in the Ingrian villages of Serepetta and Pankkala, both of which were destroyed in WW2.
I played one of these tunes on a frula (wooden whistle) I was trying out at Serbia’s national frula festival in Prislonica, and, astonishingly, the instrument’s maker spotted it as Finnish. And the nice middle-aged ladies who were cooking for the festival appeared and whisked me off to the village hall to feed me as an honoured foreign guest. Needless to say, I bought the frula, and very fine it is too.
