about

A combination of two Finnish tunes, alternating as parts one and two. 'Tupakkarulla' is a well-known Finnish lullaby. I learned it from 'Kaustisen Laulukirja 1' where it’s noted from the singing of Martta Puumala and Bertta Valo to Jussi Wirkkala in 1977. 'Tuuti Hussaa Ja Lullaa', also in 'Kaustisen Laulukirja' as sung by Aila Rauhala to Simo Westerholm, is a song of Kreeta Haapasalo (1815-1893), who became famous around Finland for her kantele concerts and to whom there’s a statue in Kaustinen.
I previously recorded versions of these (not on marovantele, which didn’t exist then) as part of a track on 1993’s 'The Language Of Snakes'. And I played 'Tupakkarulla', on kantele, as the very last notes in Thomas Newman’s score for Dome Karukoski’s lovely 2019 film 'Tolkien'; Dome, as a Finn, wanted to give a hat-tip to the influence on Tolkien of Finnish mythology, and it occurred to me as a choice that would be suitably recognisable to other Finns.
