about

The Hogmanay song of this title apparently had, for a time, some popularity, and from the evidence of 20th-century renditions by Kenneth McKellar and the like seems to have been sung in a jolly-rollicking major waltz-time. I found its tune in 'Songs Of Scotland Without Words' (1852, ed. J.T. Surenne). John Dunlop (1755-1820) had written the lyrics as a poem, and the tune was put to it, it seems, around 1820 by W.H. Moore. I’ve moved some of the notes up and down quite a bit for my version, but they’re in the same order (as Eric Morecambe might have said).
