about

Comp/arr: Cronshaw/Aleksanyan/Blake/Kurki-Suonio/Trad.

Andrew Cronshaw: zither
Ian Blake: soprano sax, bass clarinet
Tigran Aleksanyan: Armenian duduk
Sanna Kurki-Suonio: vocal

Late in this otherwise instrumental track Sanna Kurki-Suonio sings a runo-song telling of the origin of the world, in which Väinämöinen, laid low by an angry man's arrow, slides from the snow to lie seven years in the sea. His knee becomes the island of Imandra, where a sea-duck builds its nest and lays a golden egg. Väinämöinen stirs, the egg breaks; the yolk becomes the sun, the white the moon, the shell the star-speckled sky and the earth beneath.
The lyrics, in Karelian Finnish, were collected from runo-singer and kantele player Iivana Shemeikka (1843-1911) of Suistamo in Ladoga Karelia. In the traditional way of runolaulu, Sanna makes her own tune as she sings.
