about

A dark and mad ballad from Ingria.

A young man finds a beautiful girl and wants to marry her. But she refuses because she doesn’t want to live with his three sisters. He rides home and tells his mother he’s not getting what he wants because of the sisters. His mother’s mind becomes that of a bird - a robin, or a magpie - and she decides to kill her daughters.
The eldest cries, “Please, don’t do it, there are men wanting to marry us!” But the mother doesn’t listen. The second one cries, “Please don’t do it! Who will take care of all the house-work if you do?” Mother doesn’t listen. The youngest cries, ”Don’t do it! If you kill us, every time you drink the water from the sea you will drink our blood.”
Mother doesn’t listen; she drowns them in the sea, and the brother gets what he wants. But the bride just sits and canoodles on her husband’s lap, while the mother has nobody to help her with all the house-work. She goes to the sea and begs it to give back her daughters, for the eldest to look beautiful, the second one to work, the youngest to carry water from the well.
But the sea answers, “Never!”
