Ema Haual / Hällilaul (the mother at the grave / Lullaby)

from On the Shoulders of the Great Bear by Andrew Cronshaw

/

about

The underlying theme is two Estonian runo-tunes played on the marovantele (the first recorded appearance of this instrument, which draws features from Finnish kantele and Malagasy marovany). We recorded the opening sounds outside Kaustinen church on Sunday May 30th 1999.

'Hällilaul' was sung by Leena Karh, who was aged 78 when Herbert Tampere and S.Kutti collected it from her in Hargla, Estonia in 1935. 'Ema haual' was sung by 62-year-old Ann Tsingel of Helme, Estonia to A.Martin in 1908. Both were published in “Eesti Rahvaviiside Antoloogia” (ed. Herbert Tampere, 1935)
